BREAKING: Jubilation Erupts as Appeal Court Gives Verdict on APC's Oyetola vs PDP's Adeleke

  • An appeal court in Abuja has set aside the ruling of the Osun state governorship election petition tribunal that nullified the election of Governor Ademola Adeleke
  • In a majority judgment, the tribunal ruled that Adeleke did not win the election and declared that Gboyega Oyetola of the APC was the winner of the poll
  • However, Adeleke was displeased with the outcome of the tribunal and challenged the judgment at the court of appeal, which upheld his victory

FCT, Abuja – The court of appeal in Abuja has upheld the victory of Governor Ademola Adeleke in the July 2022 governorship election in Osun state.

According to Channels Television, the appeal court set aside the Osun state governorship election petition ruling that nullified the governor’s victory.

Why the court reinstated Ademola Adeleke as Osun state governor

Recall that the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) declared Adeleke the winner of the state’s July 16, 2022, guber election.

According to INEC, Adeleke garnered 403,371 votes ahead of Oyetola, the then-incumbent governor, who polled 375,027 votes.

The APC and Oyetola rejected the election’s outcome and challenged Adeleke’s victory at the tribunal.

In January this year, in a ruling of majority verdict by the Tertse Kume-led 2-member panel, the tribunal annulled the election that produced Adeleke and upheld that Oyetola won the poll.

But a minority judgment by Justice B. Ogbuli held that Adeleke won the election.

Adeleke and the PDP, unsatisfied with the tribunal’s judgment, approached the court of appeal.

On Monday, March 13, 2023, the court of appeal listened to the argument of both parties and reserved its judgment.

But while giving its verdict on Friday, the appeal court set aside the tribunal’s rulings.

However, the court has embarked on five minutes break and will give its final judgment on its return.

Osun guber tussle: Appeal court to deliver judgement on Adeleke’s fate Friday

Legit.ng earlier reported that the appeal court in Abuja had fixed Friday, March 24, to decide the fate of Governor Ademola Adeleke of the PDP on the nullification of his victory as the Osun state guber election tribunal.

Adeleke, in his appeal, prayed the court to dismiss the tribunal’s judgment that nullified his election and declared Gboyega Oyetola of the APC as the poll winner.

The tribunal had in January ruled that Oyetola and the APC were able to establish that there was over-voting in the July 2022 election that produced Adeleke as governor of the state.

BREAKING: Atiku, Obi's Cases Against Tinubu Suffer Setback As Judicial Workers Declare Strike, Gives Reason

  • The judiciary workers have announced that they would commence industrial action from Wednesday, against the removal of the fuel subsidy
  • The workers under the umbrella of JUSUN cited the resolution of the NLC NEC meeting while asking its zonal leaders to mobilize members to comply with the directive
  • JUSUN going on strike means that the petitions filed by Atiku Abubakar of the PDP and Peter Obi of the Labour Party will suffer some setbacks as the hearing would be suspended

FCT, Abuja – Members of the Judiciary Staff Union of Nigeria (JUSUN) have declared an industrial action against the fuel subsidy removal by the federal government.

Following the announcement by President Bola Tinubu on his inaugural day that “subsidy is gone”, the price of fuel has doubled in the last week, Daily Trust reported.

NNPC Price of petrol in Nigeria after Tinubu removes fuel subsidy

The Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation Limited (NNPCL) subsequently ordered its retail stations to increase the price of fuel per litre from N197 to between N488 and N570.

In its reaction, the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) declared a nationwide strike, scheduled to commence on Wednesday, June 7.

M.J. Akwashiki, the general secretary to JUSUN, in a statement on Monday, asked all the states’ chapters and branches to embark on nationwide mobilization as well as withdraw their services from Wednesday.

Why judiciary workers declare strike against fuel subsidy

Akwashiki in his statement cited the resolution of the NLC national executive council (NEC) at her meeting on June 2 over the skyrocketing price of the Premium Motor Spirit (PMS) by the Federal Government through the NNPCL.

The statement reads in part:

“All zonal vice presidents are to coordinate their zones by ensuring that branch and chapters chairmen mobilise their members for a total compliance.”

How fuel subsidy removal will affect the PEPC hearing of PDP Atiku and Obi Labour Party suits against Tinubu

President Bola Tinubu’s team had met with the Labour union to ration alternatives and palliative for the workers but the NLC suspended further discussion with the government until it reversed its decision on the removal of the fuel subsidy.

The JUSUN strike will put on hold the hearing of the Presidential Election Petition Court where Atiku Abubakar of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) and his counterpart in the Labour Party, Peter Obi, are challenging the 2023 election produced Tinubu as the president.

Bola Tinubu: Industrial court verdict, 4 other reasons NLC strike may fail

President Bola Tinubu from his inauguration day hit the ground running when he declared that the “fuel subsidy is gone”.

The announcement has put the country in an uneasy corner as fuel marketers have immediately increased the price of the commodity and the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) is already planning to embark on a strike scheduled for Wednesday, June 7.
