13% Refund: “Edo Received Only N2.1bn Out Of N28bn”, Obaseki Replies Wike

  • Governor Godwin Obaseki on Wednesday reacted to Governor Nyelsom Wike’s statement of Rivers State that the FG had refunded the shortfall of the 13 percent derivation funds to all the states of the Niger Delta
  • The governor noted that Edo state only got a total sum of N2.1 billion paid in three installments of N700 million per quarter
  • Meanwhile, Governor Wike, last week, thanked President Muhammadu Buhari for releasing what he tagged the arrears of the derivation funds to the states in the Niger Delta states

Benin City – The Edo State government, on Wednesday, November 23, reacted to the controversy trailing the alleged release of trillions of naira out of the arrears owing the state from the country’s 13 percent derivation formula, saying it has only received N2.1 billion out of the N28billion due to the state.

The state’s Commissioner for Finance, Budget, and Economic Planning, Joseph Eboigbe, stated this in a chat with journalists in Benin City, Vanguard reported.

Obaseki replies Wike

The Edo State Government insisted that it received only N2.1 billion out of the expected N28 billion which is its share from the 13% oil derivation paid by the Federal Government to oil-producing state in the country, The Nigerian Tribune added.

He said:

“It was the Commissioners of Finance in Nigeria under the aegis of FAAC, especially those from the oil producing states that spotted the fact that there was an anomaly in respect of the Federal Government spending money from crude oil and gas sales and not taking out derivation.

“So, the work was done and a total of about N1trillion was established as due to the oil producing states, it went through the whole process and the FEC approved it and a methodology for repayment as approved by RMFAC and they now agreed on what would be due to each state.

“Edo State’s share of that figure was N28billion. What was also approved was the way and manner this money would get to the states. The net amount that will come to each state over five years; each year, you will have quarterly remittance which means four releases each year over five years.”

2023 Election: PDP plunges into crisis in popular southern state as disparities ensue over candidates list

The Edo state chapter of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has been plunged into a crisis following the recent development of the candidates’ list in the state.

According to The Nation newspaper, there are disparities in the list of candidates due to the factional situation prevalent in the party.

The faction is said to be led by the incumbent governor, Godwin Obaseki, and another faction led by Chief Dan Orbih, the national vice-chairman of the party in the south-south region.

Governor Obaseki sacks commissioner gives reason

In another development, the governor of Edo state, Godwin Obaseki, has sacked Engr. Newton Okojie, his commissioner for Roads and Bridges.

A statement announcing Okojie’s sack on Monday, October 31, indicates he lost the job over alleged poor performance.

Governor Obaseki directed the Permanent Secretary in the ministry to take charge pending the appointment of a substantive commissioner.

Reno Omokri Shares Letter Chicago State University Sent Him after Asking if Tinubu Attended School

Reno Omokri, a chieftain of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), has again commented on the certificate saga of the All Progressives Congress (APC) presidential candidate, Asiwaju Bola Ahmed Tinubu.

Omokri, the former aide to ex-President Goodluck Jonathan, declared that Tinubu attended the Chicago State University, contrary to claims on social media.

The PDP chieftain had earlier said he was convinced Tinubu attended the American university after investigating the claim that the former Lagos governor lied about graduating from the school.

He said he “believed the lie” that Tinubu did not attend the school and “wasted $4000 plus flying to Chicago to investigate in person!”

As the issue refused to die down, Omokri again on Monday, November 28, shared the copy of a letter the university allegedly sent to him to confirm Tinubu graduated from the varsity.

“Dear Nigerians,

“Thanks all for your feedbacks. To those who feel the letter is fake, you may also either travel to @ChicagoState University, or contact them via their contact details which I hereby provide again (email Phone +17739952000),” Omokri tweeted as he shared the letter.

The letter, dated June 7, 2022, allegedly sent by the Chicago State University to Omokri read:

Rufai Oseni, an Arise TV journalist, said:

“Reno claims he visited Chicago state University on the 19th of September, and the document he presented is dated 27th of June.Can he kindly explain further?”

Yobe state – A chieftain of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Alhaji Haladu Mohammed, has defected to the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) ahead of the 2023 general elections.

The former PDP chieftain was received into the APC fold by the Yobe state governor, Mai Mala Buni, according to a statement by Mamman Mohammed, his media aide.

Defections hit PDP ahead of 2023 elections gathers that the PDP had earlier lost Alhaji Abbagana Tata, a former chairman and governorship aspirant of the party, and Hajiya Masafaram, the strong woman of Yobe North politics.

They defected along with thousands of their supporters to the APC.

Tata and Masafaram had been loyal members of the PDP for 23 years but joined APC to support Governor Mai Mala Buni’s administration in the task of building the state.

Daily Independent also reported that some of the remaining members of the PDP in the state have also indicated an interest in moving into the APC.

“We are making some few consultations, l assure you we will also join APC very soon,” an anonymous PDP member was quoted as saying.

2023 elections: Governor Tambuwal’s Special Adviser, PDP chieftain defect to APC

In a similar development, Bello Malami, a special adviser to Governor Aminu Waziri Tambuwal of Sokoto state, dumped the PDP for the APC ahead of the 2023 general election.

Malami, who was in charge of the Marshall, the state-owned security outfit, explained that he joined APC because of the way it was gaining acceptance in the state, Daily Trust reported.

He was received into the APC fold by the party’s leader in the state and senator representing Sokoto-North Senatorial zone, Aliyu Magatakarda, Wamakko and the Minister of Police Affairs, Muhammad Maigari Dingyadi, at the former’s residence at Gawon Nama on Saturday, November 26.

Jigawa – The Jigawa state police command has said it has no hand in the arrest of a 500-level student of the Federal University, Dutse.

The student, identified as Aminu Azare, was reportedly arrested for posting a tweet accusing the First Lady of Nigeria, Aisha Buhari, of “eating poor people’s money”.

The tweet, which was written in Hausa and accompanied by a photo of the first lady, read in English:

“Mama has eaten poor people’s money and is now full.”

The student was reported to have been arrested by operatives of the Department of State Service (DSS), a development that led to a backlash from Nigerians on social media.

While DSS has not reacted, other media reports also claimed the police arrested Azare.

The Punch reported that the Jigawa police spokesman, DSP Lawan Shiisu, said he was not aware of the arrest.

“We didn’t make the arrest. An arrest cannot be made in my area without me being informed,” he was quoted as saying.

Parents of student arrested for saying Aisha Buhari ‘ate poor people’s money’ beg for forgiveness

Earlier, reported that the parents of Azare, called on the first lady to forgive and release their son.

The uncle of the arrested student, Shehu Baba-Azare, reportedly said the family was pleading with the president’s wife to forgive their son.

He said the family had no knowledge of the arrest until five days later when their son’s colleague told them he had not been seen for days. The uncle said further that the family had been thrown into a state of confusion with their son’s arrest.
